PHYSICAL EFFECTS

​The physical dimension of health is shown to be affected in a person with Type 2 Diabetes or T2DM, as risk factors such as high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) can have a major impact on a person’s health. Often Type 2 may come on slowly and patients can live without knowing they’ve had the disease for years. Symptoms include unquenchable thirst, weight loss, tiredness, blurred vision, urinating frequently, and more hunger. (Mayoclinic.org, 2025). It can elevate the chances of experiencing severe health complications, such as neuropathy. Neuropathy is where one experiences recurring pain, numbness, tingling, or even burning sensations in the limbs due to nerve damage. In the end neuropathy can lead to poor circulation and slow-wound healing, which can raise the risk of infection. At times in severe situations, it can lead to amputation of limbs or body parts. Uncontrolled diabetes is linked to cardiovascular diseases like hypertension and atherosclerosis, which can put strain on the heart and increase the likelihood of heart attacks or strokes. Moreover, diabetes can inflict severe harm on an individual’s vascular system. As an individual progresses towards old age, blood circulation remains undeveloped due to fat deposits in and around major arteries and veins. This makes direct blood circulation almost impossible. Therefore, it can lead to a widespread increase in bodily inflammation, further aiding weight gain. Difficulty in losing weight can amplify insulin resistance. The rise of other diseases inflates the possibility of dangerously straining one’s kidney and/or heart. Kidneys may suffer which can lead to diabetic nephropathy. Left untreated, this can result in Kidney failure. Unregulated high glucose quantity in blood can give rise to vision problems over time, completely paving the road to blindness. Losing vitals for an individual isn’t easy and can be completely devastating both physically and mentally. Living with diabetes makes an individual more susceptible to infections and diseases due to chronic inflammation and a weakened immune system. With Type 2 diabetes, the physiological aspect of health is profoundly affected as it impacts multiple organs and reduces a person’s ability to perform day-to-day, everyday activities. This can significantly lower one’s quality of life.
